Frequently asked questions

Does EMpower Veterinary Physiotherapy cover my location?

We are based on the Surrey/London border and mainly cover locations in and around the A3 corridor, although surrounding areas can be discussed. We are frequently in Cobham, Woking, Esher, Bookham and Guildford.

Subject to external factors, we sometimes visit Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein in Germany, and may be able to offer limited services in this area. Please get in touch if this is something you would like to enquire about.

Abhängig von externen Faktoren besuchen wir öfters Hamburg und Schleswig-Holstein, und können dort möglicherweise eingeschränkte Termine anbieten. Bitte kontaktieren Sie uns, wenn Sie hierzu Interesse haben.

What benefits can I expect to see in my animal after a treatment session?

Every animal is different and will therefore respond to treatment in different ways. Often the body needs a few days to process the treatment, so may be a little stiff which is why we suggest giving your animal a quiet day or two after the session. Once the initial stiffness subsides, some changes may be noticeable straight away, such as a more relaxed posture or improved gait. Other improvements may be gradual and become evident with regular sessions. These include:

-reduced pain

-greater muscle strength

-improved coordination

-better balance

-faster recovery from injury

Do I need a referral letter from my vet to be able to access physiotherapy services for my animal?

At EMpower vet physio we work closely with your vets and therefore encourage you to speak to them before starting physiotherapy sessions. Guidance from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) states that veterinary referral is not needed for maintenance cases (i.e. those with no pre-existing conditions or lamenesses), however any animal with diagnosed or undiagnosed pathologies will require veterinary consent prior to commencing physiotherapeutic treatment. This helps us to get a deeper understanding of what treatment is likely to be most beneficial for you pet.

We have a referral letter we will send to you for your vet to fill out.

My animal has a specific injury or condition, will it benefit from physio?

Absolutely! Physiotherapy is great not only for speeding up the healing time of injuries but also for ensuring optimal recovery. This is because it encourages tissue fibres to be laid down in a more parallel orientation (rather than the random arrangement usually seen in scar tissue), improving muscle extensibility and therefore reducing the risk of re-injury. In addition, rehabilitation plans can be created that are unique to your animal, giving you a step my step guide on how to go about returning them to their original strength. Some conditions that frequently benefit from physiotherapy are:

-gait abnormalities

-arthritis

-neurological conditions

-muscle strains and sprains

As mentioned above, all animals with injuries or conditions will require veterinary referral in order to begin physiotherapy treatment.
